The dining decision is broken

You spent $38 on a fra diavola you didn't love.

A single star can't tell you the carbonara is incredible and the salmon is overcooked. Reviews are filtered, faked, and weighted toward whoever shouted loudest. Star ratings answer the wrong question.

SmackLip rates the dish, not the restaurant. The recommendations come from people whose tastes match yours — not the average of 4,000 strangers.

How it works

Three minutes. Zero dollars. Lip-smacking good.

Spend three minutes setting up your SmackLip Basic Profile™ — seven sliders that capture how you actually taste food. After that, SmackLip stops asking where do you want to go? and starts answering what should I order?

01

Profile

Seven sliders capture core taste sensations: Astringent, Bitter, Salty, Sour, Spicy, Sweet, Umami. No essays. No quizzes.

02

Recommend

Open the app at any participating restaurant. SmackLip surfaces the dishes that match your profile — each with a Tongue Rating™ specific to you, not a star average.

03

Rate

After your meal, slide a few rubric-driven questions ("How was the salt?"). The engine improves your profile and the dish's score in the same pass.

Why SmackLip

Built around your tongue. Not the loudest reviewer's.

Tongue Rating™

The rating that's actually about you.

Slider-based, rubric-driven, and structurally hard to fake. Every Tongue Rating is calculated against your taste profile — so a 4.8 means you will love it, not that strangers averaged a 4.2.

Dish-level

Rate the dish, not the place.

A single restaurant rating can't capture a 40-item menu. SmackLip tells you the carbonara is incredible and the salmon is overcooked.

Built for your budget

$25 dinners stay $25 dinners.

Set your price range. SmackLip won't push a $90 entrée when you're looking for casual.

Taste Buddies™

End the "where do you want to go?" loop.

Add your friends. SmackLip finds restaurants where every person — including the picky vegetarian, the carnivore, and the gluten-free friend — will love at least one dish.

Golden Tongue Profile™

Earn a richer profile.

Rate enough dishes and unlock texture, temperature, fattiness, and aftertaste — plus beer- and wine-pairing modules.

Dietary safety

Allergens. Gluten. Medications.

Alerts on allergens, religious-observance constraints, and potential food–drug interactions.

Aging well

Taste changes. So does your profile.

SmackLip re-checks your profile each year. Recommendations follow you — not the other way around.

By the numbers

Seven sliders. Three minutes. Free forever.

That's all it takes to start eating better.

7
taste axes

Astringent, Bitter, Salty, Sour, Spicy, Sweet, Umami — the dimensional taste graph.

3min

That's the entire onboarding. No essays, no quizzes — just sliders.

Eating well, for everyone

1% of revenue, every year, starting at public launch.

One in eight Americans is food-insecure. SmackLip exists to help people love what they eat — and we don't think that should stop with people who can afford it.

Starting the day SmackLip launches publicly, 1% of every dollar of revenue goes to Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation and other food-bank partners working in the cities we serve. Not 1% of profit. Not "if we can." 1% of revenue. Every year. Audited and reported on this site.

Modeled after 1% for the Planet. Eat. Learn. Play. is the inaugural partner; additional food-bank partners announced as SmackLip expands.

For restaurants

Finally see, dish by dish, what your guests actually loved.

SmackLip ratings are slider-based and rubric-driven. No free-text essays. No review-bombing. No astroturfing. Just structured signal — for the conscientious chef.

Sample data — sortable tables, click any dish for the full breakdown.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

What does SmackLip actually do?

SmackLip recommends the specific dishes — not just restaurants — that you, personally, will love. You spend three minutes building a SmackLip Basic Profile™ across seven taste axes. After that, SmackLip surfaces dish-level recommendations at the restaurants near you, each with a Tongue Rating™ that's calibrated to your taste, not the average reviewer's.

How is this different from Yelp or Google Maps?

Yelp and Google Maps rate the restaurant. SmackLip rates the dish. They average 4,000 strangers' opinions; SmackLip weights the opinions of people whose tastes match yours. Their reviews are free-text and easy to fake — Yelp removed 47,900 reviews in 2024 alone. SmackLip ratings are slider-based and rubric-driven, which is structurally harder to manipulate.

Is it really free?

Free forever for the basics. Power up with Golden Tongue™ and beverage modules from $1.99/mo, or all three for $5.99/mo. The SmackLip Basic Profile™, dish recommendations, and rating are all free — no caps, no metering. Optional upgrades unlock the extended Golden Tongue Profile™ (richer taste dimensions like texture, temperature, fattiness, aftertaste) and the Wine and Beer pairing modules. Launch promo: take all three for $2.99/mo for the first 90 days.

Can I use SmackLip to plan group dinners?

Yes. Taste Buddies™ lets you add your friends and finds restaurants where every person in the group will love at least one dish — including the picky vegetarian, the carnivore, and the friend with celiac. No more "where do you want to go?" loops.

What about food allergies and dietary restrictions?

The taste profile feeds dietary-safety alerts on allergens, gluten, religious-observance constraints, and potential food–drug interactions for diners on certain medications. Set it once, see it everywhere SmackLip recommends.

Where is SmackLip available?

SmackLip is in private beta on iOS TestFlight, with 1,020+ restaurants seeded across 51 Bay Area cities at launch. Additional metros are rolling out — join the waitlist above and we'll tell you the moment we're live in your area.

Why doesn't the menu for my restaurant look the same as the actual menu?

SmackLip's menus come from two sources. Many are crowdsourced from real diners who've already rated dishes; for newly added or smaller restaurants — where no one has rated yet — the app starts with a suggested menu generated from the restaurant's name, cuisine, and location. These AI-suggested dishes are clearly marked with a small "AI" tag inside the app so you always know what's confirmed vs. what's a best-guess starter menu. They're a placeholder, not a promise — never substitute them for a quick check with the restaurant before ordering.

If you spot a dish whose name or description is off, tap the Edit pencil next to it. If a real dish is missing, add it from the Find / Add affordance at the top of the menu. Your fixes are shared back to every other SmackLip user instantly. The more diners correct, the more accurate every menu becomes — for you, your Taste Buddies™, and everyone after.
